Leadership Egos kill Companies.

An uncomfortable truth often overlooked.
When leaders can step in and step up without ego magic really happens.
I've seen the opposite it far too many times, and never more so today in the emergence of AI.
Fear drives when a leader’s identity is tied to performance. They become reactive, anxious, defensive, or over-controlling. You get burnout, fear-based decision-making, and team withdrawal.
The internal mental load is goes like this...
“I need to look right.”
“I need to be seen as capable.”
“I need to be the one who knows.”
“I need to control the outcome so nothing reflects badly on me.”
That is a self-protection system, not a leadership system. And it shows up in tiny, subtle ways long before it becomes obvious.
And that’s why it’s so damaging.
It's natural, I get it, ego is human. But Leadership Ego (yes with a capital E!) shrinks information flow and slows adaptability, the very two lifelines of any healthy business.
Ego asks:
“How do I protect my image?”
A Leader asks:
“How do we create the best possible outcome?”
After decades in business, many things come along to make you humble, to make you real, to make you see that shared success is the key.
And when you can see that it's not YOUR success that counts, but those of the people around, those you bring up with you that contribute day to day to the success of a whole business, giving credit to those who care deeply enough to challenge and fight with abandon for what they believe in, that's the moment there your ego is dismantled and rebuilt into actual wisdom.
