Adaptive Strategy for a Changing World

For the longest time I've talked about about my view that being reactive in a marketplace that’s always evolving isn’t playing to win. Being proactive in seeking invisible value gaps is the key to staying ahead of the game. And I believe that understanding signals for future adaptability and leading with change is always the advantage... that's much truer now than it's ever been.

A few weeks back I got the chance to sit down with Penny Murray again to unpack Adaptive Strategy, and why 'marketing' needs a rebrand. Or better still a 're-education'. Somewhere along the way it's been relegated to clicks and tactics, but in fact holds so much more strategic value. It holds the key to fuelling business advantage through future signal sensing and bringing in valuable market intelligence.

In the latest NZ Marketing magazine article we cover:

º Why adaptive strategy is the new advantage.

º How market leaders hold power in the boardroom by reading the market better than anyone else

º Why great strategy doesn’t live in decks, it lives in the everyday habits of cross-functional teams working as one.

º The real reason AI won’t replace strategic marketers anytime soon...

What didn’t make it to print this time, but matters deeply:

→ Strategic Theatre vs Strategic Motion

We talked about the rise of 'strategic theatre' - businesses building artifacts that look like strategy, but that don’t do anything or move anything forward. This is real reason many are feeling stuck.

→ Context not Volume is the Real Differentiator

We unpacked why “more content” and “more data“ isn’t always the answer, ‘more context’ is where the insight lies. Teams are burnt out, buyers are overwhelmed, and the winning brands are those who understand and deliver context, not volume.

→ AI’s Role in Strategy, not just a tool.

We went deeper into how AI isn’t a strategy in itself, but it is an amplifier. And how if the wrong direction is set, AI just accelerates poor decisions or overload

→ CMOs as Market Intelligence Translators

Explored why CMOs need to stop reporting on clicks and start translating market confidence in the Board Room with clarity - de-risking decisions and advocating for customer-centred strategy.

→ Misalignment Around What Strategy Is

We touched on different functions (Ops, Product, Marketing, Finance) often have different unspoken definitions of what “strategy” means, which leads to disconnect and confusion, and how the shift to 'teamship' can solve that.

This one’s for anyone feeling stuck, managing complex challenges, misalignment, or stagnation in your B2B growth strategy. There is a better way and it starts with how you read the market, and how you choose to ‘place your bets’.

🫶 Thanks again NZ Marketing Magazine and Penny Murray for having us!
